Archaeological investigations conducted during the construction of the R-217 "Kavkaz" motorway near Derbent have unearthed evidence of an ancient settlement.

The researchers from the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences have found out that the uppermost strata of the site date to the Bronze Age, while the lower layers correspond to the Eneolithic period. Initial discovery occurred in 2022, but precise chronological analysis and attribution to a particular archaeological culture were only possible following excavations in 2025.

These investigations revealed that the lower levels of the settlement belong to an Eneolithic cultural group previously undocumented in the Northern Caucasus. This culture appears to have existed contemporaneously with the similar groups in the southern lands of the Eastern Caucasus, located on the opposite side of the Caucasus Mountains.
