The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation has set such a task, taking into account that in 2024 the region achieved a record rice harvest exceeding 160 thousand tons. This has been announced by Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov, the Chairman of the Government of the Republic of Dagestan, during a meeting on the development of the regional land reclamation complex.
Land reclamation is a crucial factor for the cultivation of rice and other crops and requires special attention at both the federal and regional levels. The Prime Minister emphasized that issues related to land reclamation are given priority throughout all stages of agricultural production in the region.
Dagestan, with its challenging natural and climatic conditions, cannot effectively function without irrigation systems. The republic is a major region in terms of irrigated agriculture, boasting an area of 395.6 thousand hectares in this sector.
The region constitutes approximately 10% of the total irrigated land area in the Russian Federation and 37% within the North Caucasian Federal District. Within the republic irrigated agricultural land accounts for 60%, in contrast to the national average of 8%.
In terms of crop production, irrigated lands contribute approximately 70%, despite representing only 12% of the overall agricultural land area in Dagestan. Abdulmuslimov emphasized the significant efforts undertaken by the FSBI "Dagmeliovodkhoz" (Federal State Budgetary Institution "Land Reclamation and Agricultural Water Supply Management across the Republic of Dagestan") to fulfill the objectives outlined by the Ministry of Agriculture, encompassing a wide range of activities such as construction, renovation and maintenance of federally-owned reclamation infrastructure.
