Sulak Canyon and Chirkei HPP to represent Dagestan at Marvels of Russia attraction contest

Makhachkala, February 12, 2015. The "Dagestan" tourist information centre of the republican tourism committee slated the Sulak Canyon and the Chirkei HPP for the festival of attractions named "Marvels of Russia", a source in the center told RIA Dagestan.
The festival organized by the Federal Agency for Tourism is designed to identify unique, unusual, mysterious and amazing places, things and events in Russia that are of interest to different groups of tourists. "Try and be surprising!" is the slogan of the festival.
The candidates for the shortlist should be unique, amazing, unusual and exclusive in the context of rest, recreation, history, natural features, accompanying events, and beautiful legends.
Here, Dagestan is presenting the Sulak Canyon and the Chirkei HPP – the most popular routes in this region. Over the past year, they were visited by more than 500 tourists who got a lot of unforgettable experiences and emotions.
The Sulak Canyon impresses with its grandeur and it resembles the Grand Canyon of the United States. In fact, Dagestani canyon consists of three canyons interconnected by small alternating extensions. It is one of the deepest canyons in the world, its peak being 1,920 meters above the water level.
The Chirkei HPP is located in a picturesque valley on the Sulak River in Buynaksk region. It is the largest power plant in the North Caucasus. It has the second highest dam in Russia and the highest arch dam in the country, too.
Marvels of Russia is a five-stage contest. The final is scheduled to run April 24-26 at Moscow International Travel Fair MITF-2015 at Russian Exhibition Center VDNKh.
