In 2025, Dagestan authorities will commence discussions on expanding the boundaries of Makhachkala, the capital city of the republic.

With this goal in mind, a dedicated working group has been established to present proposals and draft a comprehensive plan for enlarging Dagestan capital by 2025. The published decree indicates that not only administrative borders of Makhachkala will be modified. Adjacent areas such as the Kaspiysk, Karabudakhkentski and Kumtorkalinski municipal districts will also be subject to changes.

In an earlier statement, Sergei Melikov, the Head of Dagestan, emphasized that the formation of Makhachkala-Kaspiysk urban agglomeration would create a synergy effect and serve as a major driver of economic growth for the entire region.
