In January 2025, Russian gas supplies to Europe through the Turkish Stream pipeline reached a record high, increasing by a remarkable 26.7%, amounting to 1.56 billion cubic meters. Despite the imposition of sanctions against Russia's major oil and gas companies, the country continues to fulfill its gas supply commitments to Europe.

The European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSOG) reported that in January 2025, supplies through the Turkish Stream increased by 26.7% compared to the previous month, January 2024. This marked a significant increase, reaching a new high.

At the Strandzha 2-Malkoclar border point between Turkey and Bulgaria, exports of this vital blue fuel reached 1.56 billion cubic meters in January 2025. This corresponds to an average daily volume of 50.3 million cubic meters of gas, which represents a 26.7% increase compared to the same month in 2024 when the average daily flow was 39.7 million cubic meters, amounting to a total of 1.23 billion cubic meters for the entire month.

The Russian-Turkish gas transportation system (GTS) achieved a remarkable milestone a month ago, surpassing the previous record by pumping nearly 1.53 trillion cubic meters of natural gas through the Turkish route to Europe in the month of December, translating to an average daily transit volume of approximately 49.35 million cubic meters.

At present, the European Union (EU) countries lack alternative sources of Russian gas supply. Following Ukraine's refusal to facilitate the transit of Russian gas through its territory, Europeans rely solely on the Balkan Stream pipeline, which receives gas from the Turkish Stream. This pipeline annually transports approximately 14–15 trillion cubic meters of gas to Romania, Greece, North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Hungary.
