On January 1st, 2025, a government decree went into effect in Russia banning cryptocurrency mining in ten regions and imposing restrictions on it in three additional regions. These measures are set to remain in place until March 15th, 2031 due to the potential risk of energy shortages in the affected areas.
The affected regions include Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, as well as Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. Additionally, mining activities are prohibited in certain parts of Irkutsk Oblast, Buryatia and the Zabaykalsky Krai during periods of high energy consumption, specifically fr om January 1st to March 15th in 2025 and from November 15th to March 15th thereafter.
Simultaneously, the roster of regions remains tentative and may be subject to revision in light of the findings of the governmental commission on electric power industry development, with the goal of maintaining a harmonious equilibrium in energy consumption. Previously, Alexander Novak, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, expressed his readiness to expand the list of areas wh ere fracking is prohibited if there is a request from regional governors.
