Cherkes-Kutan landfill remains one of the main environmental problems in the region. In Dagestan as well as in other Russia’s regions, landfills have been reclaimed as part of the federal "Clean Land" project under the national "Ecology" project. As part of this project, the republic has eliminated four landfills in Kaspiysk, Yuzhno-Sukhokumsk, Khasavyurt, and Buynaksk, spending RUB 1 billion.
The reclamation process was carried out in two phases: technical and biological. After all the trash had been removed from the sites, a layer of soil was added and some mini-fertilizer was sprinkled over it. Then, perennial grass was planted. At the same time, trees and shrubs around the were planted.
Thanks to the reclamation project, more than 35 hectars of land have been returned to use - now they are planned to be used for agriculture. This has improved the quality of life for more than 227,000 residents in Dagestan, as these areas are now free from garbage and unpleasant smells.
